Sense memory from February 2010

bobcat tracks in the snow, next to a hollow in the snow
sinuous snowbanks edging a dark still creek
bobcat tracks cross a small island of snow with two tree trunks emerging from an icy pond edged by bare branches

When: February 2010
Where: past Keechelus Lake
With: volunteers for the Community Wildlife Tracking Project
What: tracking wildlife along I-90 at Snoqualmie Pass to gather data in support of a wildlife overpass (constructed!)
Accompaniment: Tiny Cities Made of Ashes by Modest Mouse

I thought I was going to be a wildlife biologist, but one field season was enough to realize I wanted the stability of a desk job. I tried to keep one toe in wildlife work in case I ever wanted to go back by volunteering. Never did, but I learned a lot about tracking 😉

This day, these bobcat tracks were our highlight. Snow reveals a hidden ecosystem full of life.

What wonders have you found in the snow?
